Amazonas » Hotels, Travel and Tourism
The state of Amazonas is located in the northwestern corner of the country, with an area of more than 1.5 million square kilometres (a little bigger than Mongolia, or France, Spain, Sweden and Greece combined; if it were a country, it would be the 18th largest in the world).
Amazonas borders the Brazilian states of Pará, Mato Grosso, Rondônia and Acre, besides Peru, Colombia and Venezuela.
The state is named after the Amazon River, and home to the highest mountain in Brazil, Pico da Neblina, which stands at 3014 metres above sea level.
Amazonas, almost entirely covered by the Amazon Rainforest, is divided into three types of habitat:
igapós (permanently flooded land where the roots of vegetation are always submerged),
várzeas (higher ground where the land is only submerged when rivers are at their highest, during the wet season) and the low plateau (still higher, never submerged).
The Amazon represents over half of the planet's remaining rainforests and comprises the largest and most species-rich tract of tropical rainforest in the world: more than one third of all the species in the world live in the Amazon Rainforest, and species are discovered almost daily.
The capital of Amazonas, Manaus, is the largest city in the north, with about 1.7 million inhabitants; other large cities are Parintins, Itacoatiara and Manacapuru.
The state has a tropical climate with well defined seasons, and the daily average temperatures range from 28 ºC in the coast to 40 ºC at the west border.
The Eduardo Gomes International Airport is like a small city in full development and has modern infrastructure, with two passenger terminals, one for scheduled flights and the other for regional aviation.
